Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

What is PBL?

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a school-wide behaviour initiative that has been implemented by the staff and students of Heckenberg Public School. It encourages positive behaviour from all students through the development of a shared language to discuss behaviour expectations at school. The behaviour expectations are presented in the form of a Student Expectations Matrix. You can download the Matrix here as a Word document:

At Heckenberg Public School we are:

  • Safe
  • Respectful
  • Learners

These are our School rules. The Student Expectations Matrix is developed around these three rules. The expectations are also developed according to locations, activities and movement in the school, including the canteen, playground, classroom, hall, transitions, etc. PBL aims to ensure that all students (and staff) share the same language to discuss behaviour and have the same expectations for behaviour.

Developing Self-Regulation and Intrinsic Motivation

At Heckenberg, we understand that students need to be fully aware of not only what the behaviour expectations are, but also the importance of the expectations. In this way, we aim to develop a value for positive behaviour and develop students' relf-regulation and intrinsitc motivation. For example, we would like to see students keep the playground tidy not purely because they may get a Happy Hector, but because they recognise the value in a tidy playground. PBL at Heckenberg involves developing students' understanding of the expectations, a value in the expectations and a commitment to regulating their own behaviour.

PBL at Heckenberg has also involved the creation of our new school mascot, Hector. Hector encourages students to be safe respectful learners. All of our positive behaviour expectations are alligned with students being safe respectful learners in all areas of school life.
